Center Stage Spotlight is hosted by Carly Jean May, who highlights local and regional musicians, artists and other creative folk.  Some shows are a solid hour with one artist and other shows highlight upcoming events and performances at local venues. It is not uncommon to have three different performers on a Spotlight show. Previous guests include: Joachim Hartung, Mathew Bingham, Love To Bleed, Robin Montgomery, and Claudia Cordorola. Since inception, more than 100 musicians have been interviewed. Airs Wednesday from 8 – 10 pm.


Chenango Session

Hosted by Andru Bemis, this weekly, nationally syndicated radio program features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms, galleries, and listening rooms—for small, enthusiastic audiences, mostly around Binghamton, New York. Children’s Hour

The Children’s Hour is hosted by Katie Stone and produced out of the University of New Mexico. Each show includes a segment where a team of kids asks intuitive questions which guests clearly enjoy answering or postulating about. 

Guests range from astronauts on the International Space Lab to scientists on the ground as well as artists and storytellers. Airing Mondays through Friday at 11 am.

This show is part of KFOI’s “530 Podcast series.” The Corbett Report is an independent, listener-supported alternative news source. Exploration

Dr. Michio Kaku is an internationally recognized authority in theoretical physics and also the environment. Exploration is a weekly hour-long radio program on science on several stations around the country and his commentaries on science can be heard on 60 radio stations nationwide.
Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Professorship in Theoretical Physics at the City College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. His goal is to help complete Einstein’s dream of a “theory of everything,” a single equation, perhaps no more than one inch long, which will unify all the fundamental forces in the universe. First Voices Radio

With more than 1 million online hits annually, this program has become known for bringing to the airwaves the experiences, perspectives and struggles of Indigenous peoples worldwide. The program’s Host, Executive Producer and Founder Tiokasin Ghosthorse is from the Cheyenne River Lakota Nation in South Dakota and the bands of Itazipco/Mnicoujou and Oglala. Tiokasin has been described as “a spiritual agitator, natural rights organizer, Indigenous thinking process educator and a community activator.” One reviewer called him “a cultural resonator in the key of life.”
Politics for the Lakota is spiritual and is not separate from the rest of life.
With nearly 70% of the Mother Earth’s remaining natural sources (resources) on Indigenous lands, traditional Indigenous practices of biodiversity preservation have, ironically, made these lands targets for political juggling, rationalized “Green” movements, global corporations seeking the last forests, genetic and plant materials, oil, and minerals to feed unsustainable growth. Intermountain Classics

Intermountain Classics – Tom Diskin hosts a weekly classical music program bringing together a wide variety of the world’s most beautiful classical music. Each week, a new program features music from all periods of classical music as well as modern musical styles which they have directly influenced. From time to time the show presents special live broadcasts and interviews with local musicians, conductors and local performing groups promoting local concert venues. A special feature of Tom’s show is “Boundaries and Crossovers,” highlighting how classical music has influenced the more modern composers and genres of contemporary music styles such as jazz, rock, Celtic, and world music. Included in each broadcast is a calendar of concerts, plays and other cultural attractions taking place in and around the north state. Tom came to the Redding area 12 years ago after having a successful teaching career in the San Francisco Bay area. He had a lifelong dream of being a classical music “disc jockey” and Intermountain Classics is the realization of that dream. As a musician, he began playing the cello at the age of nine and has been playing continuously since. He is member of the Shasta Symphony Orchestra and occasionally plays chamber music with local musicians. Mondays 8-10:00 pm, encore airing Saturdays 1-3 pm.

OUTCASTING

OutCasting Media produces public radio’s LGBTQ+ youth programs and related content. It presents a look at issues pertaining to the LGBTQ+ community as seen through the eyes of young LGBTQ+ people and allies and provides insight into the broad dimensions of the LGBTQ+ youth experience. OutCasting goes far beyond mainstream media coverage, which tends to be limited and sensationalist. And just as important as the issues OC covers is their outlet for young voices — a population still marginalized, potentially victimized, and rarely heard. Airs Wednesdays at 10:00 pm.

 


 

Pacifica Evening News

The Evening News on Pacifica broadcasts each weeknight from the studios of KPFA-FM in Berkeley, the nation’s first listener-supported radio station.  The Evening News is a collaboration of KPFA and its sister stations KPFK-Los Angeles and KFCF-Fresno. This hour-long broadcast seeks to bring unreported and under-reported stories of interest to Californians, with a focus peace, and social & economic justice. Monday – Friday 6 pm.

 


 

Project Censored

Project Censored educates about the importance of a truly free press for democratic self-government. They expose and oppose news censorship and promote independent investigative journalism, media literacy, and critical thinking. An informed public is crucial to democracy in at least two basic ways. First, without access to relevant news and opinion, people cannot fully participate in government. Second, without media literacy, people cannot evaluate for themselves the quality or significance of the news they receive. Censorship undermines democracy. Project Censored’s work—including their annual book, weekly radio broadcasts, campus affiliates program, and additional community events—highlights the important links among a free press, media literacy and democratic self-government. RAGAS

As part of our wake-up and good morning music hour, one day a week we present raga music. To South Asian musicians, raga is the most important concept in music-making, and the classification of ragas plays a major role in Indian music theory. In northern India, ragas are classified according to such characteristics as mood, season, and time; in southern India, ragas are grouped by the technical traits of their scales. Ralph Nader

Ralph Nader is an American political activist of Lebanese origin, as well as an author, lecturer, and attorney. Nader brings his decades of perspective and international contacts together each week in this program presenting the need for and providing a showcase for individual and collective activism. Areas of particular concern to Nader include consumer protection, humanitarianism, environmentalism, and democratic government. Nader came to prominence in 1965 with the publication of his book Unsafe at Any Speed, a critique of the safety record of American automobile manufacturers in general, and particularly the first-generation Chevrolet Corvair. In 1999, a New York University panel of journalists ranked Unsafe at Any Speed 38th among the top 100 pieces of journalism of the 20th century.  Nader is a five-time candidate for President of the United States. An all-women run radio and television show that brings progressive news coverage and interviews rooted in gender and racial justice to a wide audience, Sonali Kolhatkar, Host and Executive Producer, built on the foundation of her earlier show, Uprising, which became the longest running drive-time radio show on KPFK in Los Angeles hosted by a woman. She has won numerous awards including Best TV Anchor from the LA Press Club. She is a weekly columnist for Truthdig.com, and an op-ed writer for teleSUR English. She is the author of Bleeding Afghanistan: Washington, Warlords, and the Propaganda of Silence, and the co-Director of the non-profit group, Afghan Women’s Mission. She has a Masters in Astronomy and two undergraduate degrees in Physics and Astronomy. Sea Change Radio is a weekly radio show whose mission is to advance the shift toward environmental sustainability. The show is nationally syndicated and podcast globally. Launched in January 2009, the show evolved from Corporate Watchdog Radio, founded by Bill Baue and Sanford Lewis in 2005. Francesca Rheannon joined the CWR team in 2007 as Lewis phased out. Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth, hosted by Margaret Prescod is a public affairs program bringing news and views on local, national, and international policies and stories that affect us all. Prescod focuses on how those of us most impacted – women, communities of color and other communities are responding. She also discusses the inter-relationship between art and politics. She starts each show with the headlines of the day. This program is inspired and named for Sojourner Truth, an African American evangelist, abolitionist, women’s rights activist and author who lived a miserable life as a slave, serving several masters throughout New York before escaping to freedom in 1826. After gaining her freedom, Truth became a Christian and, at what she believed was God’s urging, preached about abolitionism and equal rights for all, highlighted in her stirring “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech, delivered at a women’s convention in Ohio in 1851. She continued her crusade for the rest of her life, earning an audience with President Abraham Lincoln and becoming one of the world’s best-known human rights crusaders.

UnSpun, An Experiment in Truth-telling – host Doug Bennett interviewed well-known authors and political commentators with a focus on Climate Change, and threats to Democracy, Truth and Justice. UnSpun shows were featured on PRX and aired by other great community radio stations like KMUD on the California coast. Doug was one of the founders of KFOI and passed away in 2019 after a life well lived, full of friends and family and good work. His activism included environmental, war resistance, deep state awareness and many other social justice issues. The show rotates with other activist / non-violence shows, Saturdays at 9am.
